Hanoi Cafe Culture - Discovering "Hidden Gems" in the Heart of the City

Hanoi has a way of tugging at the heartstrings with its classic French architecture and time-worn collective quarters (khu tập thể). Here, finding a cafe tucked away inside an old villa or perched on the top floor of an ancient building is a perfectly normal—yet magical—occurrence. If you have the chance to visit the capital, you must step into these spaces to truly feel the intersection of Hanoi’s vintage soul and modern pulse.

Here is our curated list of "hidden gems" for your Hanoi coffee journey:

Offstreetfinecoffee

  • Address: 7 Ngõ Yên Thành, Cửa Bắc (8:00 AM – 6:00 PM, Closed Mondays)

  • Must-try: Espresso-based drinks, Matcha.

Located in the heart of Ba Đình district, this cafe was converted from a two-story house with a minimalist yet cozy aesthetic. Despite its modest size, it never feels cramped. The drink quality is the result of meticulous research, ranging from Specialty Coffee and Hand Brews to refined teas. The staff are not only experts in their craft but also incredibly attentive and hospitable. A high-quality pitstop for true coffee aficionados.

Note: The shop closes at 6:00 PM to return peace to the residential neighborhood, so arrive early to soak in the atmosphere.

Tamai Hanoi

  • Address: 2nd & 3rd Floor, 60 Ngô Thì Nhậm (8:30 AM – 7:30 PM)

  • Must-try: Various tea selections.

In French, "Tamai" sounds like a warm shortening of Ta maison ("Your house"). True to its name, the shop welcomes you into a space as comforting as a beloved home. Occupying the upper floors of an old French villa, Tamai preserves a breezy architectural style with large windows that bathe the rooms in natural light. The decor changes frequently, giving the space an artistic, ever-evolving look. The menu is diverse, featuring carefully prepared coffee, tea, and juices, all beautifully presented.

Reng Reng Cafe

  • Address: Apt 101, Collective Quarters A1, 12B Lý Nam Đế (8:00 AM – 2:00 PM, Closed Mondays)

  • Must-try: "Bà Nà" or "Ông Nà" (Signature creamy coffee).

If you want to challenge yourself with a "strict" yet captivating coffee experience, head to Reng Reng. Tucked in a small alley with limited space, this shop is famous for its unique rules: no Wi-Fi, no air conditioning, restricted photography, and a strong preference for silence. Despite this, it remains packed thanks to its legendary creamy coffee—rich, bold, and velvety. Many regulars believe the "strictness" acts as a catalyst, making the flavor experience even more refined and rewarding.

Note: They do not serve take-away in plastic cups. Please bring your own reusable tumbler if you want coffee to go.

Tranquil Books & Coffee

  • Address: 19 Cao Bá Quát (8:00 AM – 10:00 PM)

  • Must-try: Coffee, Matcha.

Hidden deep within an old house, Tranquil opens up into a rare peaceful courtyard amidst the bustle of Hanoi. The space exudes a vintage vibe with warm wood tones, rustic raw brick walls, and lush greenery. Here, you can experience two different worlds: while the sun-drenched outdoor courtyard is usually buzzing with patrons, the indoor area—lined with towering bookshelves—is a sanctuary for those needing absolute focus to work or read. The drink quality is consistently excellent, making it a staple for locals.

OiA Coffee

  • Address: 73 Trần Quốc Toản (7:00 AM – 10:00 PM)

  • Must-try: "Mây" (Cloudy creamy coffee), Pandan Leaf Tea, Yellow Lemon Tea.

Reimagined from the foundation of an old French villa, OiA Coffee is a sophisticated blend of traditional materials like tiled roofs, raw brick walls, and rustic rattan handicrafts. The shop offers a spacious two-story layout that is incredibly airy, featuring comfortable cushioned seating. Don’t miss their fruit teas made with homemade syrups or their exquisite pastries, which pair perfectly with a cup of traditional Vietnamese phin coffee.

A message from the locals: These cafes can sometimes be a little hard to find, but the journey of weaving through narrow alleys or climbing creaky old stairs is exactly what makes the Hanoi coffee experience so special!
